However, Angelus limited himself to killing thieves, murderers, and rapists. He even tried to save a missionary family. Darla discovered the family — a father, mother, daughter, and infant child — killing all but the baby, whom she kept as a test for Angelus. Incapable of killing an innocent, Angelus fled with the baby, forever renouncing Darla. In , Darla and Angelus crossed paths once more in Budapest. By October , Darla was living in Berlin, Germany. In September , Darla had moved to England.
After so many centuries, Darla still lured her victims by pretending to be a timid, innocent young woman, even adding a schoolgirl uniform to her act. One of those she killed was Chris Boal , an ex-student that she drained on the grounds of Sunnydale High School. It was the inadvertent warning sign for Buffy Summers — the Slayer — that vampires were active in Sunnydale.
Despite facing Buffy, however, Darla managed to take Jesse underground thanks to the intervention of Luke , the Master's leading acolyte.
The following night, Darla joined Luke, the newly sired Jesse, and other vampires in their attack against the Bronze , where Luke intended to perform the Harvest in order to release the Master from his mystical prison. For weeks, Darla laid low while several members of the Order — including Zachary — fell to Buffy's stake.
She offered to kill the Slayer as an offering for her sire, but he sent The Three , a trio of ancient vampire warriors, instead. However, the Three failed due to the intervention of Darla's former lover Angelus, who had renamed himself "Angel" and allied himself with the Slayer. As penance, the Three offered their lives to the Master, and he allowed Darla to dust them, a task she gladly carried out. Understanding that brute force wouldn't be enough to kill Buffy, Darla devised a plan to turn her against Angel, and force one to kill the other, though she hoped Angel would kill Buffy in self-defense and, having experienced killing once again, return to her side.
Darla pretended to be a classmate of Buffy's in order to be invited to the Summers residence. Once inside, she attacked Joyce Summers , Buffy's mother, biting her and leaving her in Angel's arms. As Darla had planned, Buffy arrived to see her injured mother held by Angel in vampire face, and concluded that Angel was drinking from her mother. The vampire and the Slayer faced each other in the Bronze, but Buffy eventually realized that Angel was not responsible.
Darla, carrying a pair of pistols with her, arrived to ensure Buffy would die. However, Darla's plan turned against her, as Angel staked her in order to protect Buffy. Soon she learned that she was dying of the disease that had almost killed her before she was sired; syphilis. It made her even more desperate to be turned into a vampire, but instead, Angel, through acts of bravery and nobility, finally convinced her to live out her remaining days as human.
Angel then went through the trials to win Darla a new chance at life. Though he endured, it was for naught as Darla had already gotten her second chance at life, and Angel reassured her that he would be there for her. After Darla rose again, she was initially upset over becoming a vampire again and attacked Drusilla. However, she quickly embraced it once more. Darla and Drusilla massacred most of the staff attending the party out of revenge for being used as pawns. Afterward, Darla and Drusilla attempted to recruit a gang of demons in order to take over Los Angeles, though they were all slaughtered by Angel.
Shortly afterwards, Angel, descending into darkness due to having failed to rescue Darla, set both women on fire, though they did not die but were severely injured. Returning home, he realized Darla was laying in wait for him. Desperate to end his pain by losing his soul, he roughed her up and they had sex, with Darla gleefully expecting him to lose his soul, as the curse breaks when Angel experiences a moment of perfect happiness such as when he made love to Buffy Summers. The next morning, Angel still had his soul; sex with Darla made him experience perfect despair, rather than perfect happiness.
Apologizing to Darla for his 'failure' to save her, Angel admitted that a part of him had seen it as part of his efforts to save himself — since she had created him, he had hoped that redeeming her would prove him worthy of redemption — but he then recognized that she was nothing to him, unable to even hate her.
Surprised, angry, and upset, Darla attempted to stake Angel after he rejected her offer of a "repeat performance" to "get it right," only for Angel to grab the stake, informing Darla that he would allow her to live in gratitude for what she had done for him, but vowing that he would kill her next time he met her.
As a result, Darla left Los Angeles. However, the unthinkable had happened: Darla had become pregnant as a result of Angel winning a life by enduring the trials in an attempt to save her when she was dying. Darla visited every shaman in the Western Hemisphere, all of whom told her that her pregnancy was inherently impossible, but also impossible to abort. With nowhere else to turn, Darla went to Angel.
Various theories emerged about the child; from a cult of vampires who worshiped it as a miracle, to the fear that it was the evil spoken of in the Tro-Clon prophesies. It turned out the child was simply a healthy human baby with whom the pregnant Darla was sharing a soul, allowing her to feel genuine love for the child and prompting her to seek innocent blood to feed it.
This did not matter to Daniel Holtz , who had been brought through time by the demon Sahjhan to kill Angel and Darla. Darla realized that she would lose her soul after giving birth and would be unable to love her child.
She feared that she would kill the child eventually as her vampiric nature re-asserted itself once the child's soul was gone from her body. Additionally, her undead body was becoming increasingly unable to sustain the life of her unborn child in time for it to be born.
When Darla went into labor, things did not look well, and it appeared that she would lose the baby. Adding to the difficulties of birth, Darla and Angel were being pursued by the murderous Holtz, who chased them into the alley behind Caritas during a violent rainstorm. Darla realized that the baby would die in the alley, just as the human Liam had died in an alley in order to birth the vampire Angelus. After telling Angel to make sure that their son would know that he was the one good thing the two vampires had ever done together, Darla staked herself, leaving behind a pile of dust and a crying and healthy infant — a final act of redemption to ensure the life of their son, Connor.
Sometime later, Darla's spirit appeared to a teenager Connor when he was being tempted by Cordelia Chase possessed by the higher power later known as Jasmine to murder an innocent teenage girl, so that her blood could anoint a pregnant Cordelia and give birth to Jasmine. Seemingly moved by his mother's words, Connor began to untie the girl, but "Cordelia" chastised him for allowing himself to be swayed by Darla's spirit, whose presence she could sense.
Cordelia's words combined with Connor's anxiety for the life of the "baby" Jasmine , ultimately won out and Connor exclaimed to Darla: "You are not my mother! The girl's corpse remained as Darla for a brief moment. Connor never mentioned what he saw to anybody. While visiting Galway, Fred and Angel discovered that the murders of committed by Angelus and Darla had became a tourist attraction. As a human, Darla was a wealthy prostitute who seemingly thought poorly of humanity as a whole.
She scoffed at religion and was displeased when the Master appeared disguised as a priest. Darla had little opinion of herself as a human saying her soul was beyond saving and willing to let Satan take her.
Unlike most vampires, Darla became a vampire by choice, accepting the Master's gift and entering into his service. Darla appears to have had little attachment to who she was before becoming a vampire, even forgetting her birth name. As a vampire, Darla was cruel, manipulative and seductive. She appeared to view things from an immortal's perspective, seeing things from the point of view of someone who expects to live forever.
She showed loyalty and dedication, though only to a certain point. She was faithful to the Master, but chose to leave his service to travel the world with Angelus, [1] though she would periodically return to him [17] and returning permanently after Angel was ensouled. Darla has also displayed pettiness and jealousy, becoming instantly aggravated at the thought that Angelus had loved Buffy more than her.
Despite her cruelty and evil nature, Darla genuinely loved Angelus and later their son Connor. She was even willing to accept her death so long as she was with Angel. When turned into a vampire for a second time by Drusilla, Darla still retained some of the positive nature she gained in her short time as a human. She initially lashed out at Drusilla angrily for turning her back. Darla mostly redeemed herself with the birth of her son Connor.
Darla was already changed by the baby in her womb she felt the guilt over the pain she had caused Holtz and expressed it to Angel. Knowing it was the only way to save her son, she staked herself, leaving Connor alive in her ashes. Darla had the standard powers and vulnerabilities of a vampire. Additionally, she was stronger than most vampires because of her age and possessed a higher resistance to holy items. When Monsignor Rivalli tried to ward her off with his cross necklace, Darla tossed him aside without a care she was around years old at that point.
Darla displayed the psychic connection vampires had with those they sire: she was able to sense Angel's presence when he was close and could even tell that he was in the same city. Somehow she retained this connection even as a human. Buffyverse Wiki Explore. Angel season 1 Angel season 2 Angel season 3 Angel season 4 Angel season 5. Other media. Angel kills his first vamp on screen although we later learn he's killed at least 2 prior to this. Angel's story Realrockerhalloween 18 September Angel is unique from the rest of season one as it explores Angel's past instead of leaving him as a mysterious stranger popping up with information.
It turns out he was vampire cursed by gypsies for punishment in killing the village's favorite daughter and given a soul. What makes it poetic is a slayer and a vampire are natural enemies who are constantly at battle. Their love is unorthodox, contradicting to the animal world, yet it bloomed a passionate romance. Another aspect was Darla's jealousy for losing the man she loved to someone who hates them. It was very emotional to think of this otherworldly creature mourning a lost loved one without a soul and her obsession almost driving him over the edge instead of moving on.
When Angel kills Darla it was powerful as it proves not only he was good, but his heart belongs to his slayer. It shows vampires aren't as inhumane as we thought and have the ability to care if they desired it. Finally a noteworthy episode, this episode centres on angel who ends up being a very important character not only on buffy but on his own spin off series, I love this episode the chemistry , its episodes like this that makes season 1 worth sitting through even the filler episodes just to see this.
Welcome To The Hellmouth and The Harvest are a great beginning while The Pack is a fantastic stand alone episode, but it was "Angel" that showed just what this series was capable of. There is a vampire with a soul and the slayer has fallen in love with him. It's classic.
Up to this point, the good and the bad were clearly defined by what they are, now, the judgment has to be made on who they are. This is also the first episode that really shows the depth of the leads, especially David Boreanez. He had just been trouble man until now, but his tortured vampire with a soul is a great character and he plays it well.
His speech about killing everything with a smile on his face is chilling and that charming smile now hides over two hundred years of evil. The chemistry between Boreanez's Angel and Sarah Michelle Gellar's Buffy finds it's potency in this episode, the kiss at the end where Buffy's cross sears into Angel's chest is one of the most memorable and metaphoric images of the series.
Thankfully, it isn't for good Okay, so I love the character of Angel. And this is one of the best episodes of the first season. It establishes Darla and Angel's past, explains Angel's curse and sets-up Buffy and Angel's romance, which will be the driving force of the show for the next several years. There is a bitter-sweetness about their relationship at this point, before the true ramifications of being a vampire with a soul become apparent next season.
They really are cute together Plus, bonus points for Angel telling Darla that the last time he'd seen her she'd been in a kimono. I love how the shows build on their history. On the downside, Darla dies in this episode. Also, I thought that The Three were pretty lame villains.
Angel and Buffy should have been able to beat them easily, instead of running and hiding. I think they were just looking for a reason to be alone together. As an interesting side note, when Buffy and Angel kiss at the end of the episode, the band is singing "I'll remember you" which becomes the title of Buffy and Angel's "perfect day" episode over on season one of "Angel. Buffy: Bad hair on top of that outfit? GraXXoR 7 August I honestly don't get it. The first time round, as a sprightly 20 something, I never got the depth of feeling of the whole Angel Buffy relationship thing.
Actually, I stopped watching Buffy after the first season due to major life events. Also, nothing about this show twigged enough to pick it up, despite pretty much everyone I know being a major fan. And as a fan of the whole genre of Vampires, gothic and the undead, that was pretty odd. In or thereabouts, I watched the whole show, all 7 seasons, and while I loved the show and Joss's vision, still the relationship between Buffy and Angel didn't resonate.
Here, at the age of 50 I decide to watch the show again, once more with feeling, and Perhaps it's the foreknowledge of what's to come, perhaps it's personal experience of loss and pain Who knows. But finally, I see what all the Bangel Slash Fiction was about. These two had serious chemistry on screen. And conversely, I wonder why I was so immune to it Jakemcclake 27 May Spoiler Alert Similar story to Twilight, but this one came first.
Unlike Twilight, Angel works alone, has no family of vampires, no one has skin like diamonds and Angel is not as fast as Edward Cullen.
Oh, Buffy is a far different person than Bella. They could easily have turned this episode into a movie and probably should have, because one could miss a powerful transition that Buffy has regarding her feelings about Angel near the end of the episode that was caused by the fact she realized that he is not the killer.
When Buffy realizes who the real killer is, she immediately responds, well, by figuratively getting her claws outs because she realizes she is being challenged for the affections of the one who she was considering killing a minute earlier. It was a good scene, but could have been played out longer.
BenTramerLives78 12 October Since the first episode, there has been much mystery surrounding Angel. This is the episode where we find out just who he is. This is one of the best episodes of the entire series and is a must watch even if someone doesn't wish to watch the whole series.
We learn about the mysterious Angel in this tightly scripted episode. The extent of Buffy's feelings for him is also revealed. Comedic relief is provided by the vain Cordelia and Darla had some great lines, too.
After a couple of episodes that filled out the other main characters but did not much further the plot, this episode moves along swiftly while providing the backstory to one of the most popular characters on the show. For me, three episodes really stood out in the first season: the series premiere, which grabbed my attention with the first scene; this episode, which provided the first major twist in what would become a main character; and the season finale, which as is the norm in the story does not disappoint.
After he saves her from a gang of vampire warriors, Angel and Buffy's relationship grows. As their love blooms, Buffy learns that Angel has been hiding a dark secret.
She hesitates, not sure what to believe, but when Angel's secret puts someone she loves in danger, she knows what she has to do. The revelation episode. This is a fantastic episode and one of the best in the first series.
I really enjoyed this episode very much and this is where everything starts. If your looking for a great episode this is the one. We finally go into the mystery which is Angel. I love the tattoo on his arm. I think the reveal of his true identity was brilliant, although I think the scream from Buffy wasn't realistic enough. I like the cryptic use of Darla, and it's a shame we didn't get to know more about her during the show as a whole.
One reason I like Darla is because I have watched Angel and know the back story of her, and I wish Buffy The Vampire Slayer had expanded on her more, I think she could have really brought something more to the show as a whole. The end was perfect, although the scar from the end, should have lasted longer into future episodes, when we've seen less damaged injuries, last longer throughout the show.
An extremely good episode overall and sets us up nicely and leaves us wanting more. PassionoftheNerd 26 January If ever an episode from the first season breaks into a Buffy fan's 'best of' list for the series its normally Angel or Prophecy Girl.
Generally In Buffy payoff episodes like these the characters or their lives are permanently changed when its over. They are part of what makes the show such a blast. The Master and the anointed one are lamenting the Slayer's recent successes.
The Master decides to send a small cadre of assassins to take her out. On the way home from the bronze Buffy gets jumped by the assassins and bailed out by Angel. They flee to Buffy's home where Angel gets all shirtless and shows off his tattoo You know Buffy, fearing for Angel's safety, hides him in her bedroom for the night.
When she comes home the next day Angel is still undiscovered. Anyway Buffy tells the gang what happened and the consensus seems to be she should stake him. Angel gets a visit from Darla who tries to convince him his attempts to be something other than a practicing vampire are a waste of time.
She can feel desire inside him. While Buffy is studying, Darla shows up at her house, tricks Joyce into inviting her in and then attacks her. When Angel tries to save her Darla throws Joyce into his arms and we can see his hunger. Buffy comes home at the wrong time. Darla tells Angel he's now in a kill or be killed position and Angel says he wants it over clip This leads to the showdown in the empty Bronze and Angel finally disclosing the curse.
As a punishment for killing a gypsy his soul was restored. For a years he's been living with the shame and self hatred of the horrible things he did as a vampire.
