Verse Click for Chapter. When he was hung on the cross, he took upon himself the curse for our wrongdoing. Holman Christian Standard Bible Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, because it is written: Everyone who is hung on a tree is cursed.
This is because the Scriptures say that anyone who is nailed to a tree is under a curse. Douay-Rheims Bible Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written: Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: English Revised Version Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: Good News Translation But by becoming a curse for us Christ has redeemed us from the curse that the Law brings; for the scripture says, "Anyone who is hanged on a tree is under God's curse.
Scripture says, "Everyone who is hung on a tree is cursed. For it is written, "A curse on everyone who is hung on a tree! For it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree," Weymouth New Testament Christ has purchased our freedom from the curse of the Law by becoming accursed for us--because "Cursed is every one who is hanged upon a tree.
Paul goes on to explain that in this way, the blessing of Abraham is extended to the Gentiles Gal Any who would believe in Jesus will not perish, but have everlasting life Jn Those who would like God to just forgive, without the shedding of blood, do not understand the reality and logic of being. No one gets away with anything in the universe. This is why all other religions have invented ways of dealing with this truth karma, etc. But God, who is rich in mercy Eph , thought of a way before time began.
They are rejecting the exile that will result from their sin by expressing hatred for that sin. The other goat suffers death, being slain and its blood used to decontaminate the physical sanctuary and through it, the camp or nation as a whole.
The people are brought to transformative repentance through their participation in the ritual warding off of the curses of death and exile. Matthew shows this through narrative. Paul touches upon it in the arguments of his epistles with examples already given. Hebrews expresses this through direct analogy Hebrews Ritual is then not done away with, but transformed and brought to a new fullness in Christ.
This participation produces repentance which brings about forgiveness, cleansing, and the healing of sin. For Israel and Judea, ritual represented a curse postponed and a deadly infection managed.
Christ through his acceptance of the curse has removed us from it. He has removed the threat of death and ended the exile by restoring us to Paradise by coming, as God, to dwell in our midst. At the sign of the cross we come in repentance to repudiate and hate our sin and to be cleansed from it. This is made real for us as human persons in the ritual life of the church and expresses itself in a moral transformation of our lives as persons and in community.
I continue to fight the baggage of misunderstanding sin from 25 years as a Protestant. I am grateful for your articles which are a help on the journey. De Young is showing the theological and contextual background for theosis. As much as you can, think how Original Sin has skewed your notion of sin, grace, atonement, works and ask yourself if your view depends on Original Sin in someway.
For instance, many Protestant converts I know and I am a convert struggle with the fact that there is no assurance of final salvation in Orthodoxy. This is because following Augustine, Calvin taught that Total Depravity made it impossible for someone to use their will to choose God. This means that God must choose them and that they will be eternally secure provided they have genuine faith. Remove Original Sin and Total Depravity and the question goes away.
In this post, instead of Christ suffering the wrath of God in our place as a punishment, he assumes the curse. But Christ needing punishment so that we could be forgiven follows Original Sin. If man has a will unable to respond to God, God must choose him for salvation, but what to do with his sin? If man is basically totally evil, with no way to choose God due to his sin in Adam, then what to do with him other than punish or destroy the wickedness. Solution, punish Christ as a a subsitute.
I could go on and on. I have always longed to know more about OT in light of the New, as it is taught in Orthodoxy. Your knowledge in this area along with your teachings are like a cool drink to a thirsty soul. Thanks so much. I apologize that they are not directly related to the theme of your post. We see this clearly in the teachings of the Church to this day.
